How to help our youths build confidence

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

In a previous article, we have discussed how building confidence can in fact protect our youths from stress. This is because confidence can help our youths navigate the challenges of growing up and achieve their goals. So, let's explore some effective ways to build confidence in them.

1) Encourage self-improvement

Encourage self-improvement by suggesting they learn new skills, take up new hobbies, or try out new experiences. When they see themselves making progress, they gain a sense of accomplishment and confidence.

2) Emphasize effort over outcomes

Praise their efforts instead of outcomes. Acknowledge the hard work they put into their activities, regardless of the results. This helps them understand that success is a process and that even if they don't achieve their desired outcome, they can still be proud of their efforts.

3) Build assertiveness

Thirdly, teach assertiveness skills by demonstrating how to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively, set boundaries, and stand up against toxic friendships. This helps them develop the confidence they need to navigate challenging situations.

4) Cultivate Self Worth

Building self-worth is also essential especially in an era where cyber shaming is prevalent. Help them recognize their strengths and value as individuals. Encourage them to celebrate their successes and learn from their failures. Build confidence is by modeling it yourself. Show them how to be confident by being confident yourself. Demonstrate positivity by focusing on the good in life and avoiding negative self-talk.

5) Guide not Dictate

Remember to strike a balance between freedom and guidance as teenage rebellion is a real phenomenon. Allow them to make their own choices while providing them with the guidance and support they need to succeed.

In conclusion, building confidence in young people is essential for their personal growth and development. By following these tips, you can help the young people in your life develop the confidence they need to succeed.
