Get your kids to love learning

Updated: Aug 5, 2023

Parents often complain to us that their kids just aren’t interested in learning. Why this happens is often due to our kids not being able to see the relevance between what they are learning in school and what they see in the real world. In the words of one our students: “Why does oxidation even matter to me?"

As Singaporean parents we tend to over-depend on structured curriculum to shape our kids’ education. While that may be effective in getting the academic results for the short term, it may dampen the kids’ natural curiosity when we make hard decisions on what they need or need not know for them. Although it may be impossible to ditch structured curriculum totally, we can put the kids in the driving seat occasionally and let them tell us what they would want to learn for the day. That could be learning more about an animal they saw at the zoo, a musical instrument they heard, history, culture or even sports. All kids are curious and we should nurture that curiosity to be the driving force for learning.

And with that curiosity hopefully come the love to know about everything else.

Here at Genie, we care for our students beyond academics. Click here to find out more about us.

All the Best to you on your parenting journey!
